normally a Session and it's corresponding Planning Locks are deleted automtically when an User closes the browser or navigates to another page. This is done in a popup window which is showing up briefly.
Planning stays locked whenever this mechanism is hindered - mostly because of an active Popup Blocker or because of a Network failure (losing WLAN Connection or dismembering a Laptop from it's Docking Station, etc. ).
I heard also of some Troubles when the application is embedded in an Enterprise Portal (not BW Portal) on certain Patch Levels.
Regarding the side effects I can't tell you. So far we didn't expierence any side effects or at least could not trace one back to a removed lock but this observation is specific to our use case (our users can only remove there very own locks and are strictly instructed to completely close all planning applications before doing so).
Therefor I can not tell if you will face any trouble with this approach.
